ITW Glenrothes

Press Foundation

Client: ITW
Location: Glenrothes, Fife
Principal Contractor: Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd
Sector: Industrial
Project Duration: 10 weeks

Overview

Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd. was appointed to construct a reinforced concrete press foundation for global manufacturer ITW at their Glenrothes facility. The foundation was purpose-built to support a new high-performance press, supplied and installed by Aida.

With heavy load requirements and tight tolerances, this was a project that demanded accuracy, planning — and zero disruption to live operations.

From Design to Site:
Getting It Right First Time

Our team was involved from the early stages of the project, providing support during:

  • Structural design reviews
  • Reinforcement detailing and bending schedules
  • Early procurement of steel to keep things on programme

This early input ensured the construction phase moved forward without delay.

Construction Activities

On site, the works were delivered in multiple stages:

  • Perimeter fencing was established to isolate the area safely
  • We saw-cut and removed the existing 150mm concrete slab, with all waste taken to licensed facilities
  • Excavations were carried out to reach the foundation formation level, followed by backfilling with compacted type 1 sub-base and installation of a 1200-gauge DPM

The foundation was constructed over three separate concrete pours:

  • Pour 1: Base foundation — including reinforcement and high-strength concrete
  • Pour 2: Excavation widening and cable track — including dowels, formwork, and additional reinforcement
  • Pour 3: Final layer and surface finish — ready for press installation

Between pours, we installed reinforcing steel assemblies and rails provided by Aida.

Specialist Input: Fabricated Steel Railings

For steelwork and edge protection, we partnered with Archway Metals, who supplied and installed fabricated steel railings to spec. Their input ensured the final setup met both safety and aesthetic requirements.

Finishing Touches

To complete the job:

  • Gratings were installed over cable tracks
  • All surfaces were finished flush and clean
  • The site was fully demobilised, ready for press commissioning by the client’s engineering team

Strong Fuondtions, Delivered

This was a technically demanding job — but with our experienced in-house team and close coordination with subcontractors, we delivered a high-performance foundation on time, on budget, and to spec.
