Overview

Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd. was appointed by Fife Council to undertake essential accessibility improvements at Canongate Primary School in St Andrews. The project involved the construction and installation of new external access ramps and steps, including handrails and surface finishes, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards while enhancing the school’s infrastructure.

Scope of Works

The project was involved the following key tasks:

Fence Adjustments and Ramp Construction

Careful dismantling and repositioning of security fencing, gates, and handrails to accommodate the new ramp design.
Groundworks and excavation to reduce levels, followed by proper compaction and material removal.
Construction of a new monolithic concrete ramp, reinforced and finished with a brush texture for safe usage.
Installation of galvanised handrails, securely set in concrete and finished to safety standards.
Laying of hot rolled asphalt with limestone chippings on a robust base, including kerb detailing.
Grass seeding carried out to reinstate damaged ground during access works.

Fence Adjustments and Ramp Construction

Reinforced mass concrete ramps built to a minimum 200mm thickness.
All surfaces brush-finished for increased slip resistance.
Over 48m² of surface paving removed and replaced.
Precision work on repositioning existing gates and fencing with new concrete bases.
Installation of compliant handrails and tactile paving to meet DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) standards.
