Gabion Retaining Wall Replacement

Overview

Menzies replaced a severely deformed retaining wall at Clatchard Court, Newburgh, using a gabion basket system.
The existing 4m-high dressed stone and brick structure was beyond repair and required careful demolition and reconstruction using a gabion basket system.

Due to poor access, the working area was extremely constrained. Services, live public pathways, and proximity to a play park made this a technically demanding project, requiring detailed planning, phased execution, and continuous coordination with Fife Council and other stakeholders.

Scope of Works

Vegetation clearance and soft play removal
Demolition of the failing masonry retaining wall and brick buttresses
Excavation and temporary works for new foundations
Installation of reinforced concrete footings with A393 mesh
Supply and install of pre-filled gabion baskets with dressed stone facing
Granular backfill, kerbing, new pathways, and fencing
Reinstatement of play park area and surrounding hard landscaping

Safe Lifting & Access

Access to the work zone was extremely restricted, particularly behind the wall. To overcome this, plant and pre-filled gabion baskets were safely craned onto the working area using pre-arranged lifting operations utilising a 130 tonne mobile crane. Our team carried out all lifting activities using approved permits and lifting plans to protect workers and the public.

Challenges & Solutions

Restricted site access and nearby public areas required careful planning. As a result, we used phased construction, controlled lifting operations, and regular communication to deliver the project safely and efficiently.

Service Avoidance

Underground utilities directly behind the wall required protection throughout all excavation and backfilling operations.

Public Interface

Working adjacent to a live park, our team maintained safety fencing and signage every day and relocated Heras panels when required. Heras panels were installed and relocated as needed to ensure continuous protection of the site boundary.

Access Disputes

A private access issue was encountered early on, requiring careful negotiation to prevent project delays.
