Overview

Shaft excavation, reinforced concrete capping, cofferdam installation, utility coordination, resident liaison.

In August 2022, we were appointed by The Coal Authority to deliver essential mineshaft capping works on Grange Road, a residential street in Earlsferry. With a four-week programme and a contract value of £51,500, the brief was clear: make the area structurally safe and future-proofed with minimal disruption to residents.

Scope of Works:

The project involved capping a collapsed historic mineshaft located approximately 3 metres below ground level. Our team installed a reinforced concrete cap at rockhead, following excavation and safe access to the shaft.

The works required the installation of a cofferdam to support the excavation and maintain a safe working environment. We also coordinated closely with multiple public utility companies to manage and protect existing underground services. Throughout the project, we maintained regular communication with residents to ensure access was preserved and any concerns were promptly addressed.

Design Responsibilty

In addition to delivering the permanent works, we were responsible for the design and installation of all temporary ground support systems. Our in-house team developed the temporary works design to ensure stability and safety during excavation.

Delivery & Outcome

Procured through a competitive tender based on a Bill of Quantities and delivered under NEC conditions of contract, the project was completed safely, on time, and within budget. The site was fully reinstated to its original condition, and the shaft is now securely capped in line with The Coal Authority’s requirements.

This project reflects our commitment to delivering technically sound, safety-led solutions.
