Pettycur Bay Holiday Park

Workshop & Motel Development

Client: Pettycur Bay Holiday Park
Location: Kinghorn
Principal Contractor: Thomas Menzies Builders Ltd
Sector: Civil Engineering
Project Duration: 2 years

Overview

Civil engineering works were undertaken for the development of a new workshop and motel facility at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park. The project involved demolition of existing structures, major earthworks, construction of reinforced concrete substructures, and installation of drainage and external infrastructure.

Enabling Works

Initial works included demolition of existing buildings, boundary walls, and site structures, along with vegetation clearance and site preparation. Trial investigations were carried out to confirm ground conditions before excavation works commenced.

Earthworks & Foundations

Large-scale excavation was undertaken to form the new building platform and foundations. Reinforced pad and strip foundations were installed to support the building structure, including blinding layers, reinforcement placement, and structural concrete pours

Retaining Wall Construction

The primary structural element of the project was the construction of a large reinforced concrete retaining wall spanning the length of the building. The wall retained the embankment and enabled formation of the development platform.

Works included excavation to formation, installation of reinforced concrete foundation slabs, and construction of 400–600mm thick reinforced concrete walls using waterproofed concrete. A drainage system incorporating free draining backfill, geotextile layers, and perforated drainage pipes was installed to relieve ground pressure and manage water behind the wall.

Concrete Floor Construction

A reinforced ground floor slab was installed for the workshop area, incorporating insulation, damp proof membranes, reinforcement mesh, and power-floated concrete finishes. A reinforced suspended upper floor slab was also constructed to form the structural base for the motel accommodation.

External Works & Drainage

External works included installation of car park areas, access routes, and drainage systems, including foul and surface water networks, manholes, and filter drains.

Outcome

The project successfully delivered the civil engineering and structural concrete elements required for the new development, with the large retaining wall providing long-term stability to the sloping site while supporting the building and associated infrastructure.
